Only after 6 months of launching one of the best phones it has ever produced, OnePlus has unveiled a new variant that’s seemingly even more capable. But are these upgrades enough to make the OnePlus 3T even better?
We spent some time with the OnePlus 3T, and here’s what we think.

Design
The design of the OnePlus 3T is hands down the best we’ve seen in an Android device, at least for the price. Even though it looks exactly like the OnePlus 3, the new Gunmetal colour is great. Like the OnePlus 3, the OnePlus 3T too has a smooth metallic unibody construction with a slightly curved back.
A pane of Curved 2.5D Gorilla Glass 4 covers the screen, with only the fingerprint sensor embedded into the Home button disrupting the smooth display. A volume rocker is located on the left below the textured alert slider, which determines what notifications you can receive. The power button is on the right. The bottom houses a 3.5mm audio jack, speaker grille and a USB Type-C charging port.
Specifications
OnePlus 3T has a 5.5 inch optic AMOLED Full HD display of 1080x1920 pixel resolution and runs on Android v6.0 Marshmallow, with the Nougat update planned by the end of this year. Like the OnePlus 3, this one also has 6GB of RAM with 64GB and 128GB of internal memory but no external card slot. The biggest different between the OnePlus 3 and the 3T is that the latter comes with a newer Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 SoC.
While this processor bump might not make any difference to the generic user but it’ll definitely enhance the performance when accompanied with the 6GB RAM. To say the least, users who are going to buy the OnePlus 3T wouldn’t have to worry for a long time. The device is ready to handle any software updates and big apps that may come its way.
Apart from the basic connectivity options, the 3T also has NFC capability which will allows users to connect to other NFC enabled devices with a simple tap. A bigger 3,400mAh battery rounds off the spec sheet.
Performance
Honestly, there is nothing negative that we have to say when it comes to the performance of the 3T. Yes, there are few software glitches like in the camera app, where ‘smile to click a picture’ fails to recognize gestures.
We didn’t really have any issues with the OnePlus 3 when it came to performance, so there are none with the 3T either. The new processor handles just about everything without any lag. From browsing multiple windows simultaneously to playing heavy games like WWE Immortals, it performs like a beast. The Full HD display doesn’t disappoint a bit, with the images being sharp and colours vibrant. The fingerprint sensor is as sensitive as it should be, it recognises your fingerprint in a jiffy.
Even under extreme usage, the OnePlus 3T performs well because of the latest Snapdragon 821 SoC which also means better battery backup. We ran the Geekbench 4 test. While the OnePlus 3 scored 689 on single core and 3939 on multi core, the OnePlus 3T scored 1859 on single core and 4339 on multi core.
Camera
The rear camera is the same that’s found on the OnePlus 3. The OnePlus 3T has a 16MP rear camera with an f/2.0 aperture, optical stabilisation and HDR. But unlike the OnePlus 3, the front camera on the 3T also features a 16MP sensor for better selfies and video chats.
Verdict
Even at an increased price of Rs 29,999, the OnePlus 3T is a highly recommended handset. It has top class specifications with the latest in hardware and software. And the fact that it’ll soon get the latest Android Nougat update makes things even better.
Some may say that the lack of external storage expansion is a downer, but 64GB should suffice for majority of users. If not, the 128GB variant costs just Rs 5,000 more.
There are some really good high-end Android smartphones in the market right now, like the Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy S7 edge and the LG V20. But they are almost double the price of OnePlus 3T.
So if you want arguably the fastest and stock-Android like experience with powerful specifications at a budget price, the OnePlus 3T is the smartphone you should get.
