Last month, Huawei-owned Honor introduced a new technology that it called the GPU Turbo which was first launched inside the Honor Play. The new software-based enhancement would ensure that extreme tasks would be diverted to a device’s GPU which will, in turn, boost gaming performances to higher frame rates with lower power consumption.
In an unexpected turn of events, Qualcomm has now teased its own version of the technology and might eventually call it Adreno Turbo, which interprets that the next piece of technology will be based on Qualcomm’s Adreno range of GPUs. The news comes as a teaser from Qualcomm China which indicated the terms “smarter”, “cooler” and “smoother”, which confirms that an alternative to Huawei’s GPU Turbo is just around the corner.
With a launch event set for August 2 where the company is also expected to unveil a new SoC, it’s unclear whether Qualcomm will be seeding the update to high-level flagship chips or also to the chipsets belonging to its 400-series and 600-series. Another thing to be considered is that, if Adreno Turbo indeed gets launched, the rollout of the technology won’t be immediate since Qualcomm would depend on OEMs to seed an update to their devices, unlike Huawei which has its own smartphones as well as Honor’s.
When GPU Turbo was released, it was said that the technology will work on software-hardware optimisations that improve the overall graphics processing power of the phone by 60 percent. Huawei also claimed that GPU Turbo will also try to minimise the power consumption simultaneously with over 30 percent of power estimated to have been saved when on the test phase.
The firsts to take charge of the technology could surely be companies who already have a gaming line of smartphones like Razer, Xiaomi and Asus. The only surprise element to this story is why did Qualcomm only tease this in China. With a date set for an announcement today, we’ll soon know why.
