Samsung Announces new display: Unbreakable and flexible


Samsung claimed that the unbreakable display has passed through military-standard durability tests in real-time and has managed to match up to the quality grade set by the US Department of Defense. The panel is indeed a flexible OLED display which is made of an unbreakable substrate and fixed to an overlay window.

Just a week after Corning unveiled its Gorilla Glass 6 with the strength to withstand 15 drops, Samsung today announced that it’s figured out a way to build an ‘unbreakable’ flexible OLED panel. The unbreakable panel is developed by Samsung Display and has been certified by Underwriters Laboratories, an official testing company in the US.

In its press release, Samsung claimed that the unbreakable display has passed through military-standard durability tests in real-time and has managed to match up to the quality grade set by the US Department of Defense. The panel is indeed a flexible OLED display which is made of an unbreakable substrate and fixed to an overlay plastic window.

Samsung says that flexible OLED panel can not only find its use on smartphones but also military devices, portable gaming consoles, screens on automobiles and lastly, tablets.

In its testing, the ‘unbreakable display’ was able to withstand 26 continuous drops from 1.2 meters in height which is significantly stronger than Corning’s latest glass technology which lasted 15 drops from 1 meter. The Samsung Display was also able to function normally after high (71 degree Celsius) and low (-32 degree Celsius) temperature testing with no damage caused to the front or the edges.

Outbidding US military standards, the Samsung Display continued work even after being subjected to 1.8-meter drops as it showed no signs of immediate damage.


Samsung Display’s GM of Communication Team, Hojung Kim said: “The fortified plastic window is especially suitable for portable electronic devices not only because of its unbreakable characteristics but also because of its lightweight, transmissivity and hardness, which are all very similar to glass”.
